JOAN MARSHALL CRESAP is an associate of Smith Mazure, PC, and brings a unique and expansive perspective to the practice of law. Joan grew up in Rye, NY. Following her undergraduate studies at Bucknell University, she earned her JD from American University, Washington College of Law in Washington DC. and an LLM degree from New York University Law School. Her law career was inspired at an early age by her namesake and forebear, the prominent US Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall. Joan finds herself at home in the Courtroom, as a fierce advocate for her clients.
As a young lawyer, she began as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of New York. In this capacity, she represented state employees and government officials and agencies from all branches of the State Government, as well as law enforcement personnel.
Later on, Joan began work in personal injury, with extensive experience in labor law, general liability, automobile accidents, coverage cases, employment discrimination and professional malpractice. She has handled a variety of cases for a myriad of insurance carriers. She has taught CLE for the NYSBA on “The Ethics of representing the Insured: Who is your client?” She has tried many jury cases in State and Federal Court.
Joan is a Member of the New York State Bar, Connecticut Bar, the United States Supreme Court Bar, the United States Court of Appeals in the 2nd and 5th Circuits, and the federal district courts in New York and Connecticut;
Westchester County Bar Association, Supreme Court Historical Society and
John Marshall Foundation
She volunteers for My Sister’s Place White plains NY and for PetRescue NY, Harrison, NY
She held Mayoral Appointments: Rye Landmarks Advisory and the
Playland Advisory Committee (2006-2014)
When not in court you might find Joan helping rescue dogs or at her pool by the beach, singing classical and rock music.
